Here’s a paper I presented for the Old Testament Theology Seminar at Gardner-Webb University on the topic of the Dura Europos Synagogue and its relatively unique art program of painted frescoes.
The paper begins with a brief introduction of Dura Europos and then moves into more detail about the Synagogue itself.

Sam, I read your article with interest. The reading of the synagogue art as being more akin to Midrash would be supported by the fresco on the left wall about Elijah and the priests of Baal. The detail of a little guy hidden in the altar (intending to light the sacrifice) who is then killed by a snake sent by God, is from Jewish legend, not from the scriptures. It features in a BAR article.
